Labor share and aging population

I study the impact of the age structure of the population on the labor share in high-income countries. I use an OLG model in a framework with voting and wage bargaining which captures the link between population aging and income allocation between capital and labor. Young and old generations have opposite objectives when they vote for public policy. This age-related conflict affects the public policy instruments, notably the out-of-work options of young agents, and thus their outside option within the wage bargaining process. Aging affects the economy through two channels, a direct effect due to the size of the cohort and an indirect effect, working through the public policy choices. Numerical simulations for France and United-States indicate that the model can replicate the data.

Gender differences in wage trajectories and job mobility over life-cycle

Wage trajectories tend to strongly diverge along the lifecycle depending on the occupations that individuals hold. At the same time, substantial gender gaps still remain and while education and experience explain little of the remaining gaps, occupations increase their relevance. Most of the existing labor market research, however, analyzes gender gaps taking occupations as given. Relying on high quality matched employee-employer administrative data for Germany for 1975-2014 and survey information on tasks content of jobs, I analyze gender gaps in the wage growth patterns considering the role played by switching across occupations and firms and wage change associated to stay in the same job.
