Abstract
**In this talk I will analyse debates on economic growth vs. the environment from the perspective of philosophy of science, in particular drawing on the recent discussions on how epistemic and non-epistemic values interact in evidential reasoning. I identify two kinds of deep uncertainty about the social-ecological systems, one concerning the Hothouse Earth pathway, and the other concerning non-capitalist societal pathway. Proponents and critics of economic growth responds to these kinds of uncertainty differently. I then explore to what extent such disagreements can be reduced by philosophical interventions.
