SUMMARY:phd seminar - Arnaud Deseau*\, Léo Reitzmann**

DESCRIPTION:*This paper uses the confiscation and auction of monastic prope
rties that occurred during the French Revolution to assess the effects of l
and reallocation on agricultural productivity. To proxy for monastic landho
ldings\, I collect and combine data on the annual income and location of mo
 re than 1\,500 monasteries in year 1768. I perform several cross-checking a
nalyses and demonstrate the validity of the data to proxy monastic landhold
ings. I show that arrondissements with greater land reallocation experien
ced higher levels of agricultural productivity in the mid-19th century. I t
race these increases in productivity to greater land consolidation\, land i
nequality and more efficient tenure practices. **Not all barrels of oil ar
e created equal: their extraction varies in both private cost and carbon in
tensity. Using a rich micro-dataset on World oil fields and estimates of th
eir carbon intensities and private extraction costs\, this paper quantifies
the additional emissions and costs from having extracted the ’wrong’ d
eposits. We do so by comparing historic deposit-level supplies to counterfa
ctuals that factor in pollution costs\, while keeping annual global consump
tion unchanged. Between 1992 and 2018\, carbon misallocation amounted to at
least 10.02 GtCO2 with an environmental cost evaluated at US$ 2 trillion (
 US$ 2018). This translates into a significant supply-side ecological debt f
or major producers of dirty oil. Looking towards the future\, we estimate t
he gains from making deposit-level extraction socially-optimal\, and docume
nt the very unequal distribution of the subsequent stranded oil reserves ac
 ross countries.\\n\\nContact: Camille Hainnaux : camille.hainnaux[at]univ-a
